Insurance available for members of the
European Buckfast Beekeepers Federation

An insurance cover is available from January 2011 for the Irish members of the European Buckfast Beekeepers Federation at Versicherungskammer Bayern, a public law foundation, belonging to the financial group of German Savings Banks and based in Munich.

The basic premium covers accident, third party, transport,
and damage by elemental powers (forces of nature).
You can also have a custom-made additional insurance for theft or damage of expensive equipment, damage to your honey house, storage building, market stall, etc. The premium in this case can be between €1.50 and €5.00 per thousand euro of value of the insured item (in relation to the specific kind of item and its value when new).

There are three categories of beekeepers the insurance is provided for:

PI - Novice beekeeper (Beginner) with 1 - 5 colonies in his/her first year
D - A beekeeper directly marketing his/her hive products
E - A full time commercial beekeeper with specific buildings, employees and selling to retailers

The basic rate also includes transport insurance (migratory beekeeping). An accident on the journey, the theft of bees, the escape of bees, damage to the brakes of the trailer or lorry or other defects occurring at the vehicle are covered.
30 - 60 colonies can be moved by the D- beekeeper, the E-Beekeeper can move 80 or 160 colonies at a time. For a D60 and the E160 an additional transport insurance is required.

Full- or part time commercial beekeepers can avail of a 50% higher benefit when paying a slightly higher rate
For 2011 only the premium includes an additional amount of €13.00 which will be paid into a special account and repaid to the insurance holder in 2012 if more than 500 members can be obtained.
The premium for members outside Germany is reduced by €1.79 because legal expenses insurance for a court case regarding the local or regional association cannot be provided.

The insurance contract is valid for a year, meaning from
first of January to 31st of December.
